Matthew 8:28-29

Matthew 8:28: “And when he was come to the other side into the country of the Gergesenes, there met him two possessed with devils, coming out of the tombs, exceeding fierce, so that no man might pass by that way.
29 And, behold, they cried out, saying, What have we to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God? art thou come hither to torment us before the time?”

Let’s not gloss over the fact that the demons all knew exactly who Jesus was. They knew He was the divine Son of God. The people of Israel may not have understood this (or they may have consciously rejected it), but the demons were not deceived. They knew who they were dealing with.

They also knew that their ultimate fate was to be tormented. They knew that their battle against God was going to go down in defeat, and that in the end they would be rounded up and cast into the Lake of Fire to be tormented forever. They knew their fate was sealed, and they were without hope.

But we can also see that the demons knew they were no match for Jesus. They couldn’t even oppose Him! The demons might have been able to overcome men, but they could not overcome God. This is clear evidence that the power of Jesus was far greater than anything the demons could handle. All the demons could do was tremble at His presence and plead for mercy. That is the greatness and power of the God that we serve.
