Matthew 9:24

Matthew 9:24: “He said unto them, Give place: for the maid is not dead, but sleepeth. And they laughed him to scorn.”

These people who had gathered to mourn the death of this girl had no faith in Jesus at all; in fact, they actually mocked Him for coming! They didn’t believe He could help her. The girl’s father must have believed, though, because he acknowledged the plight of his daughter when he went to get Jesus. He believed that Jesus could do something about it, even though the others did not. The girl’s parents were right: Jesus did raise their daughter back to life.

In another one of the gospels we are given more details of the scene. It’s worth noting that the people who were present when Jesus raised the girl from the dead were only those who believed He could do it. The rest – those who mocked Him – were kept away and missed the miracle. Jesus revealed Himself to those who had faith in Him, and He hid Himself from those who did not believe.
