II Peter 3:11-12

II Peter 3:11: “Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness,
12 Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?”

This verse runs completely counter to mainstream thought. The world says “If we’re all going to die tomorrow then let’s party today. Eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow is doomsday.” Peter tells us that is not even close to how a Christian ought to respond. He tells us that, since we know that all of these things are to be destroyed, we should therefore pursue holiness! Our reaction to the coming end of the world should be an increased passion for God, not an increased passion for worldly pleasures. Our hearts ought to be fixed on Jesus, not on these things that are about to be destroyed.

The world says “The end is coming, so enjoy life while you can.” God says “The end is coming, so since all these things are going to be destroyed, spend your time on something that will not be destroyed.” That is the difference between God’s wisdom and Man’s wisdom. Man says “The tide is coming in, so enjoy your sand castle while you can.” God says “The tide is coming in, so stop building sand castles. Invest in something that is actually worthwhile.”
